Scholar Activists
Social work research seeks to build knowledge that can create change and improve community outcomes by informing individual programs and public policy. This project requires social work scholars to engage in a range of activities from designing and conducting studies to analyzing data and disseminating findings. Key to these endeavors is our ability to organize and communicate with stakeholders by writing, listening, talking, and showing up in community spaces and discussions. The leadership of SHAWN team members Sam Morrison and Nelly Birmingham in the SCSU student response to ICE detentions in CT exemplifies the skills and practices of the scholar activists. This is complicated and courageous work that the SHAWN project seeks to nurture and encourage. Click HERE to read the New Haven Independent article about this activism.
